Hey I’m Xavier Buttke. I’m from northwest Wisconsin and have been playing digimon since BT4 and have enjoyed the ups and downs of the game and how fun it is coming from a yugioh background myself.
Yellow Vaccine
So the deck I chose to play is yellow vaccine armor. The key cards for the deck are bt14 patamon and of course bt16 magnaX. The deck's strengths are building a magnaX fast and trying to control the board with an impenetrable wall. The deck also has easy ways to gain memory and extend with security manipulation and easy evos from security. The weaknesses are wide fast decks that can rush you down before you can get set up or decks that evade magnaX and can still get to your security like Mirage.
General Game Play
My general style for playing the deck is trying to control the board with magnaX coming from playing Blackwar where you control with a big blocker, I play it similarly. Then I try to use the rapidX’s and ruin modes to try and clear the wide boards people try to make.
My worst matchups are the obvious Numemon decks. If they get the ukkomon train going along with running through their deck with numeX and MonzaeX to continue to put bodies on the board it gets tough to keep up.
Salamon's inheritable plus rapidX ability to kill small bodies and wide boards helped me stay in the game and I tried my best to keep them off of Valk ACE the best I could.
The next hardest is Imperial. If they get the set up with their dual tamers and draw the pieces sometimes they can just win before you get a magnaX set up. Tyrant and the Yellow Vaccine mirror are the next hardest. The games come down to a tower staring contest between MagnaX and MagnaX in the mirror and MagnaX and Tyrant. Heaven’s Judgement was a great out in the tyrant matchup and in the mirror it was just trying to find an opening to push through opposing MagnaX’s to win.
Demon lords would be the next in difficulty but that’s a race against the ogudamon clock. If you get a MagnaX out or 2 fast enough you can usually beat that clock and their removal is very limited. I got 2 out of both games I played fast and won because of them.
RapidX which was my friend Joel Breezee is an easier matchup for me with how must we have played and rapidX is not as good of a boss as MagnaX and any opportunity I get to heaven’s judgement multiple rapids I go for limiting the ability to Megagargomon ace and the amount of 4s left to go into rapidX.
The easiest matchup is sec con basically just making sure magnaX is immune before checking security and they can’t do anything against it.
Mulligans
So mulligans would be for the obvious bt14 patamon and bt14 T.K. with hopefully a level 4 to place into security to make sure I had the play turn 2.
If I didn’t get the patamon or T.K. though any rookie plus another level 4 was a keepable hand to work my way up into a MagnaX.
The main thing was that I would try to make it possible to get a MagnaX turn 2 any way possible. Which is the goal of the yellow vaccine deck over the blue armor version.
Some other tips I would say is sometimes yes you have to take it slow and win by control and taking over the board. Other games you can’t just wait, especially the fast decks like numemon and imperial. If you take too long you could just be dead before you even get started.
Shoutouts
Shoutouts to D20 Gaming in Eau Claire Wisconsin which are my main locals, also to my friends Joel Breezee (who took 6th), Duncan Vought, Ashley Wilson, and Delenn Roberts for being my travel buddies for the 9 hour drive to Gen Con. Also a shoutout to all my opponents who were great sports and had great matchups against. I wasn’t going for the win, just luck was on my side with patamon hits all day and good draws throughout.
