Introducing New Digimon's Abilities in Starter Deck 4 5 6

Overview

The Digimon Card Game English version for starter decks Red, Blue and Yellow have just released on TODAY (27 Nov), at the same time with the booster box ver1.0. There is a huge excitement over the internet for the tamer in Western and North American. For Japan and Asia area, on the same day, 27th Nov 2020, there are 3 new starter decks that introduced to digimon player, those are ST4 (Giga Green), ST5 (Mugen Black) and ST6 (Venom Violet)

This post is going to focus on introducing new digimon's ability that haven't appear in previous starter decks and booster box (BT01, BT02 and BT03) or new powerful digimon.

Digi-Burst

Digi-Burst is introduced in all 3 new starter deck (green, black, violet). This is an optional ability, you can choose to digi-burst your digimon in order to trigger one specific effect of that card.

The digi-burst is the new ability of LV6 digimon. These 3 all have "Digi-Burst 2", meaning trash 2 card to trigger 1 effect.

For green [ST4-13] Herculeskabuterimon: by trashing 2 cards from this digimon's digivolution source, it can trigger the effect: Rest 1 of opponent's digimon. This effect is very valuable, it is equal to playing a Flower Cannon (2 costs) to rest 1 opponent's digimon.

For black [ST5-13] Blitzgreymon: by trashing 2 cards from this digimon's digivolution source, 1 of your digimon gets +4000DP until end of your opponent's next turn. This effect can be useful for the black non-reboot digimon that is resting after attacking in this turn. Adding 4000DP can protect it from getting destroy in opponent next turn.

For violet [ST6-13] Cresgarurumon: by trashing 2 cards from this digimon's digivolution source, you can play a LV3 purple digimon from trash for free. This is totally useful for Purple since the color super-ability is to revive digimon from trash. There is no mentioning in the card that you can or cannot trigger "when played" effect of that LV3 digimon, so i guess it can use "when played" effect.

New Inheritable Skill

For the green color, a new LV5 in starter deck [ST4-11] Megakabuterimon, inheritable effect: your turn, once per turn, When this digimon deletes an opponent's digimon in battle and survives, trash 1 of your opponent's security cards. I foreseen that this card will become very popular in tamer battle. This inheritable effect is even more valuable than "Piercing". With piercing effect, the digimon may be destroyed if it hits a digimon in security pile that has higher DP than itself. But with this inheritable effect, it simply destroy the opponent security from the top, don't care about DP.

For the black starter deck, I noticed that there is no special new skill in inheritable effect, but these cards catch my eyes. The [ST5-04] Toyagumon and [ST5-06] Greymon: End of opponent turn: If your opponent's digimon did not attack at all during this turn, trigger <Draw+1>. Black color is the color of defense, there is many blockers in black, the opponent will only attack when their digimon DP is higher than the blocker. That guarantees the chance to get <Draw+1> when using these cards inheritable effect is high. More draw would give more advantages for black color since almost no <draw+1> in black digimon effect.

New Powerful Digimon

If you are a purple tamer, you must be very excited over this card.

[St6-12] Venommysotismon, when digivolve: Until end of opponent's next turn, 2 of your digimon get <Retaliation>. This digimon double the value of the option card [BT3-108] Dark Despair (2 costs), that can only make 1 of your digimon get <Retaliation> (vengeance). You can use this digimon "when digivolving" effect to set <retaliation> for your resting digimon.

A Winning Blue Imperialdramon Deck Review

Overview

This deck revolves around the jamming effects of your LV3 to LV6. Many cards have the ability to make your digimon active again, which you must leverage to wear down your opponent's security quickly before they set up blockers and more devastating plays. Your strategy should be to earn an early game advantage which in turn forces your opponent to slow down and play more defensively. Try to go first wherever possible.

This deck was also recently featured on DTCGreview as a tournament winning deck: https://twitter.com/DTCGReview/status/1327955037474095110

Level 2 Digimon

[BT3-002] Demiveemon (4 cards) is important for draw power. This makes the decision to sacrifice a  jamming Veemon or trade with a blocker easier, as you can retaliate with pierce or squeeze in another early security check whilst drawing a card in a process. I find [BT2-002] Demiveemon (1 card) a worthy addition as well, as so very few blue Digimon let you easily inherit extra DP. This lets you get rid of any other level 6 in the game if your opponent is bold enough to leave themselves vulnerable.

Level 3 Digimon

[BT1-030] Gomamon and [BT3-021] Veemon are the 3-cost LV3 of choice as they give you an early game advantage by incentivizing attacks as soon as they come onto the board. The remaining half of your 14 LV3 digimon should all be 2-cost ones, [ST2-02] Gomamon and [BT1–028] Elecmon, for memory control and the option to rookie rush your opponent. I recommend no fewer than 14 LV3 digimon.

Level 4 DIgimon

I opt for 3 cards of [BT1-032] Frigimon, [BT1-037] Gorillamon, [ST2-07] Grizzmon (blocker) and [BT3-025] Exveemon. Frigimon is essential for adding jamming pressure against your opponent but be mindful it's dead weight against blockers. Exveemon is perfect for a early rush if you can pull it off but Gorillamon is the star of the show – low cost evolution with high DP is really a safe bet in most games.

Level 5 Digimon

[BT3-027] Paildramon (4cards) and [BT3-055] Dinobeemon (4 cards) are staples and there's really nothing more to say except to max them. Being jammers, they are great for taking down another security and triggering a draw.  Undoubtedly, Paildramon is the one that you want to put onto the board if you intend to end the game with your level 6s as his inheritable skill allow your Imperialdramon to attack at least twice per turn. Dinobeemon's piercing ability is only useful for making your opponent think twice before attacking with LV3 or LV4 or blocking your jammers.

Level 6 Digimon

This is where the fun begins! I add 3 of each Imperialdramon ([BT3-031] and [BT3-111]) variant as they are incredibly powerful in the right situations. Blue Imperialdramon is great for finishing off the game upon evolution if you have more than 1 jammer on the board. If you have Paildramon and Veemon on the board with 3 memory with no blockers to worry about, you can swing a total of 5 times in a single turn. Green Imperialdramon is also no slouch in the offensive department; you can take out a total of 3 security and 2 rested digimon if you evolved on top of Paildramon and you swing for security first (IMPORTANT). Be mindful that green Imperialdramon loses jamming and draw power, so pick your Imperialdramon and your battles wisely based on your opponent's deck profile.

[BT2-049] Puppetmon is also a great addition to your deck, and it traditionally works well with rookie rush strategies and this deck is not any different. Play him as a response to high cost removals or if you need to protect your LV3 and LV4 digimon for one more turn to swing for game. Puppetmon is most effective when played consecutively, and often I wished I had one more in hand to truly lock my opponent down. It's brutal  when you play it against green with a full board of rested digimon, or highly invested stacks such as Omnimon. With Puppetmon, you also improve your chances of drawing both a green and blue digimon when you play Daisuke ([BT3-093] Davis Motomiya).

Option and Tamer

I play 3 of [ST2-13] Vulcan's Hammer, because while I acknowledge the utility this card brings in any situation, I also recognize how it can brick your hand if your opponent plays anti-memory gain digimon like [BT3-046] Terriermon.
Using 2 cards of  [ST2-16] Ice Wolf Claw is imperative for getting rid of heavy threats or devastating set ups such as Ragnaloardmon. [BT3-093] Davis Motomiya (Daisuke) is key to setting up your plays and ensuring devastating bricks are few and far between – however I add only add 3 copies as I really only ever want to play him once per game; it is very difficult to justify paying 4 memory for an additional card or 2.

Rookie Rush Red: the Cheapest Deck Ever

Overview

Normally people use "Blue" to play Rookie Rush because it gives many <Draw+1> (Read one blue hybrid rookie rush review here). Seeing a red rookie rush mixes with some green digimons is kind of new for me, especially this deck is totally extremely rookies-play style. There is no LV5, LV6 or LV7 at all, it uses the lowest level which is LV3 and LV4 only, and still strong enough to win tournament. Check out the deck here.

Agumon Dominance

There is 3 types of LV3 Agumon are used in this deck, makes it total 12 cards to serve the purpose of <Securitycheck+1> for [P-010]Greymon.

The cheapest cost [BT3-007] Agumon, with only 2 costs to play directly from LV3. The other two, [P-009] and [ST1-03] Agumon should be used to digivolve from digitama. Once it reaches [P-010]Greymon, this digimon gains <Securitycheck+1> check.

LV3 and LV4 digimons, It has a bunch

All cheap 2-cost LV3 digimons are used in this deck, red [BT1-009] Monodramon and [ST1-02] Biyomon, and green [BT3-044]Aruraumon. The LV3 red [BT2-010] Biyomon is put in to gain +1 memory "when destroyed". The LV4 [BT1-019] Darktyrannomon, which only 1 cost for digivolve but providing 6000DP, that can deal with blocker since normal blockers are 6000DP only.

Free play from Security check Digimon

This deck is using upto 8 cards (2 digimon types) for security digimon that can play at end of the battle, gives 16% of chances that it can be in security pile.

BT3 Union Impact gives these new type of digimon called security digimon. For red, it is [BT3-011] Greymon and for green, it is [BT3-049] Flymon. But even if they are not happened to be in security pile, it can be used as normal LV4 digimon to digivolve from LV3 with 2 costs.

Deal with Blocker or Rookie Rush Sweeping Digimon

Rookie Rush is easy to play, but it is fragile. This deck includes 2 option card types (total 8 cards in deck) to deal with opponent blocker or powerful digimons.

[ST1-16] Gaia Force can deal with any type of digimon in the battle (rest or active), the [BT3-104] Positron Laser : up to 2 of opponent digimon cant attack or block until the end of opponent next turn. The Positron Laser is used when you think you can win next turn and Gaia Force is used for emergency since it is expensive to play (8 costs). This deck also use a 1 cost option card [BT1-108] Horn Buster, 1 digimon gets +3000DP until the end of your turn, but I think it is great if it is hit from Security pile, can rest one of opponent digimon.

Weakness: The enemy of Rookie Rush, [BT2-018] Volcanicdramon, "When Played: Destroyed all the opponent's digimon with 400DP or less"

Overview

The BT-03 Union Impact Booster did not give many blue digimons compared to other colors. These days people focus more on black-red Ragnaloard or green Ceresmon or purple Mastermon, the blue is getting faded, (haha). But actually, the low level blue digimon is showing their potential to be noticed in tournament, let's see what we can do to build a blue deck with this new tactics.

Jamming: we should not forget

Needless to say, blue is the color giving most jamming digimon. With jamming digimon, it cannot die when it checks security, so the deck need to include other supports that help them active to check more security.

There is 3 low level digimon in blue with jamming, those are [BT1-032] Frigimon, [BT2-026] Veedramon (need a blue tamer) and [BT3-021] Veemon. When we use these digimons to attack security, we need to find out the way to re-active them, else they are easy to be killed in next turn.

Make it Active again

The hottest candidate for blue in BT-03 is [BT3-025] Exveemon, when digivolved (2 costs) 1 of your LV.4 or less digimon becomes active. Normally I will digivolve this digimon after attacking security with LV3 or LV4 jamming digimons. This digimon give 1 more security check when it re-actives another low level digimon. It can also digivolve to a rested LV3 digimon and becomes active again.

The LV4 [BT1-036] Garurumon is also a good card to be used in the deck. When played, 1 of your digimon becomes active. We can either play it directly from your hand with 6 costs (if you have a lot of memories) or play it from digivolution source of [BT3-030] Leopardmon  or [BT1-044] Metalgarurumon for free. The Garurumon can use to re-active any rested digimon, no matter what its level. The Leopardmon also give jamming to all your LV4 or less digimon, it becomes the most worthy LV6 digimon to be used for this strategy.

Another LV4 digimon, [BT1-115] Veedramon, a secret rare card, "when attacking, once per turn, if you have a tamer, make this digimon active". To use this card, I use the [BT1-098] V-Nova Blast (only 2 cost) to make this digimon jamming, check security one, due to Veedramon effect, this digimon active again and check one more time.

More draw needed

Since we need a tamer to make Veedramon becomes jamming and re-active Veedramon, then use [P-012] Taichi. He is cheap (2 costs) and give <draw+1> when rested. The new blue digitama [BT3-002] Demiveemon, give <draw+1> if this digimon had jamming.

Digimon Card Meta

The starter deck [ST1-11] 12/4 LV6 WarGreymon is not very popular in the current meta, mostly due to the fact that it costs a hefty 4 memory to digivolve. This means that it is extremely likely for your turn to end immediately after digivolving. This makes him a very likely candidate for removal cards such as Terra Force without him being able to do anything yet.

In some tournament decks, the other [BT1-025] WarGreymon is more often played for lower 3 memory digivolution, with <SecurityAttack+1> only on digivolution and <OptionJamming> while attacking the security. At 3 cost for digivolution, he is more likely able to check securities on the same turn, and while you also [BT1-085] Tai Kamiya this is pretty much guaranteed.

Also to note while both these WarGreymons can inherit +DP effects to almost guarantee survival during security attacks, only the [BT1-025] WarGreymon can jam security option cards. In most decks removal options are usually played at maximum copies, so there is a 50% chance of checking an annoying option such as Gaia Force or Hammer Spark.

To be honest the only true drawback of the ST1 WarGreymon is its 4-cost digivolution. I would've scored it 4/5 if they lowered his digivolution costs. He most likely cannot even stay on the field long enough to digivolve into Omnimon (if you have him)!

Digimon Card Meta

The starter deck [ST2-11] 12/4 LV6 MetalGarurumon can, once per turn during attacking, unsuspend itself. Let's take a look at the competition:

    • [BT1-115] 6/3 LV4 Veedramon: once per turn when attacking, if you have a tamer, unsuspend this digimon.
    • [BT2-032] 13/3 LV6 UlforceVeedramon: during your turn, when one of your blue tamers becomes suspended, unsuspend this digimon.
    • [BT1-036] 6/2 LV4 Garurumon: when played, unsuspend 1 of your digimon.
    • [BT2-028] 8/3 LV5 AeroVeedramon: when digivolving, if you have a blue tamer, unsuspend 1 of your blue digimon.

This effect is not only aggresive, but also far more flexible than <SecurityAttack+X> (since you can choose to target digimons, or to keep yourself safe after attacking).

When compared with Veedramon, this effect is far better suited for MetalGarurumon as it has a far-higher DP to survive a security attack. Meanwhile when compared to UlforceVeedramon this card is much better suited for turbo decks such as the Omegamon Turbo as it does not rely on fielding tamers.

Furthermore, being a LV6 this digimon can inherit effects with high synergy, such as [ST2-08] Weregarurumon for <SecurityAttack+1> and [BT1-041] Zudomon for memory+1.

And lastly, do not forget that 2 copies of MetalGarurumon costs 500 yen (in the starter deck) while UlforceVeedramon would cost upward of 2000 yen per card! Talk about value!

Q

Q

This is the starter deck Seraphimon. My first impression of him was not too strong: a 10000 DP digimon that can reduce the opponent’s digimon’s DP by 4000. And so I thought: why not just make him a 14000 DP digimon? Well maybe that is also too strong so they want to keep him at 10000 DP during the opponent’s turn?

Last week I was playing with my husband and when he played this card, he used the effect on my 4000 DP digimon and then attacks my other suspended digimon, which caught me by surprise because he is able to destroy 2 of my digimons!

Performance: 4/5
Art: 3/5 Nothing special here!

Digimon Card Meta

The [ST3-11] Seraphimon can reduce the DP of an opponent's digimon by 4000 when attacking. Let's compare this against other similar DP-reduction effects:

    • [BT1-062] SlashAngemon: on digivolve, reduce an opponent's digimon's DP by 8000.
    • [BT2-041] ShineGreymon: reduce opponent's DP by 4000 for each of your yellow tamer in play.

At first glance Seraphimon's effect may look viable, since it triggers on attack hence can be used in consecutive turns. However, when we consider that he only has 10000DP, he will almost certainly not survive your opponent's turn. Furthermore, without inheriting effect from [BT2-035] GeoGreymon, he cannot even destroy most LV4 digimons. With all these being considered puts even SlashAngemon in much better value than Seraphimon. Of course, in the current meta there is simply no competitive yellow decks that does not play ShineGreymon, which should instead by your main nuke instead of Seraphimon.

The only deck that Seraphimon can excel against would be a rookie rush deck, so maybe play just a single copy for that moment? There are better ways to deal with rookie rushes so I cannot recommend Seraphimon for competitive.

Competitive value: 1/5
Art: 3/5 (no offence, but I feel most of Nakano's work lacks pose and details)
